HLTA-Kauai Workshop

Hawai`i Lodging and Tourism Association - Kauai (HLTA-Kauai) presents "The Collective Spirit of the Hawaiian Culture"

Friday, October 19:  Cultural site tour and artistic creation sessions at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa including breakfast, lunch, tour and learning sessions. 

Cost: HLTA Members: $35.00 for full day (includes light breakfast, transportaion, lunch and kits for demonstration sessions. Cost for non-members: $45.00 for the morning session, $35.0o for the afternoon session or $60.00 for a full day. Call Jolene Ogle at 808-652-8924 or email

7:00 a.m.: `Awa Ceremony - Grand Court

This ceremony surrounds ancient Polynesian traditions associated with the `awa root. `Awa is also known as kava. The public is welcome - No fee.

7:30 a.m.: Ho`opa`a Inoa/`Aina Kakahiaka (Registration & light breakfast) - Grand Promenade

8:15 a.m.  Board bus for a cultural site tour of Kauai's south shore, includes chants and historical interpretation at the Kaneiolouma Kahua (complex). According to Hawaiian cultural protocol and customs all attendees should avoid wearing red or yellow clothing or accessories as these colors are reserved for Ali'i (royalty). In addition, according to custom, those with open wounds or bleeding should avoid attending and abstain from wearing jewelry and makeup. Mahalo

10:30 a.m. Return, light refreshments with an interactive session on kinolau (endemic plants and their uses), conducted by Bula Logan.

11:30 a.m - 12:30 p.m.
Hawaiian buffet luncheon and Chop Box.

12:30 to 3:00 p.m. Hawaiian cultural creation sessions (please pick one).
   -- Gather hala. Learn how to clean and cut this plant, then create your own woven bracelet
-- Create your own kapa (tapa) cloth. Learn how to clean and prepare wauke, along with a lession on creation of dyes used to imprint designs on the kapa.
-- Gather coconut leaf and learn how to clean and prepare the leaves, then make a woven bowl.
-
                

--Kapa-making (making and designing bark cloth): Verna Takashima, kit provided - Noted Kapa creator `Anake Verna, will create as well as help you imprint pieces of kapa.
